미켈란젤로 (Buonarroti Simoni, Michelangelo di Lodovico)

미켈란젤로는 살아 있는 동안에는 물론 현대에 이르기까지 여러 세기에 걸쳐 가장 위대한 

예술가의 한 사람으로 추앙받아왔다.

수많은 그의 회화·조각·건축 작품들은 현존하는 가장 유명한 작품들로 손꼽힌다.

그중 오늘날 가장 잘 알려진 것은 시스티나 예배당의 천장화임에도 불구하고

미켈란젤로는 스스로를 무엇보다도 조각가라고 여겼다.

그는 평생 대리석 조각에 몰두했으며 단지 일정 기간만 다른 분야의 예술작업을 했을 뿐이다.

 

미켈란젤로가 생전에 유명해진 또다른 이유는 그의 예술 생애에 대한 기록이 당시나 그 이전의

어느 예술가보다도 훨씬 풍부하게 남겨졌기 때문이다.

그는 살아 있는 동안에 훌륭한 전기가 2편이나 출판된 최초의 예술가였다.

그중 하나는 화가이자 건축가였던 조르조 바사리가 쓴 〈예술가 열전 Lives of the Most Einent

Painters, Sculptors & Architects〉(1550)의 마지막 장으로, 이 장에서 바사리는 현존하는

예술가로서 유일하게 다룬 미켈란젤로의 작품을 그 이전의 다른 모든 예술가들의 역작을

능가하는 예술의 최고봉으로 평가했다.

이같은 찬사에도 충분히 만족하지 못한 미켈란젤로는 조수였던 아스카니오 콘디비를 시켜 

별도로 짤막한 책(1553)을 쓰게 했다.

아마도 미켈란젤로의 구두 설명을 기초로 해서 썼을 이 책은 그가 원하는 그의 모습을 보여준다.

미켈란젤로가 죽은 후 바사리는 〈예술가 열전〉의 2번째 판(1568)에 반박론을 실었다.

학자들은 콘디비의 권위있는 저술을 선호하지만, 바사리의 생동감 넘치는 문장과 그의 책이

지닌 전반적인 중요성 및 여러 나라 말로 자주 재판되는 등의 이유에서 바사리가 쓴

미켈란젤로의 전기는 가장 일반적인 참고자료가 되고 있다.

또한 그가 남긴 수백 통의 편지, 스케치, 시 등의 유품은 생전에 누린 명성으로 당대의 어느

누구보다도 많이 보전되어 있다.

그러나 이렇듯 엄청난 자료에도 불구하고 논쟁의 여지가 있는 문제들에 대해서는 종종

미켈란젤로의 주장만 알려져 있다.

 

후세 사람들에게 미켈란젤로는 셰익스피어나 베토벤처럼 인간의 비극적인 경험을 가장

깊이있게 보편적으로 표현하고자 했던 몇 안 되는 위대한 예술가들 가운데 한 사람으로

기억되고 있다.

그의 작품들에 대한 큰 명성과는 대조적으로, 그의 작품이 후세 예술에 끼친 영향은

상대적으로 제한되어 있다.

이는 아마도 미켈란젤로에 의해 연상되는 거의 우주적으로 장엄한 독특한 표현 형태들이

모방을 어렵게 한 것으로 보인다.

그의 작품에서 일부 영향을 받아 거의 전적으로 의존하는 경우가 더러 있는데, 이런 식으로

작업했던 예술가로서 가장 재능이 있었던 예술가는 다니엘레 다 볼테라였다.

 

17세기에 미켈란젤로는 해부학적 소묘의 일인자로 여겨졌지만, 그의 예술의 보다 폭넓은

다른 요소들은 별로 주목받지 못했다.

마니에리스모 양식을 추구한 예술가들은 그의 벽화에서 나타나는 압축된 공간이나

그 이후에 〈승리〉에서 사용한 구불구불한 자세를 채택한 반면에,

19세기의 거장 오귀스트 로댕은 미완성으로 남겨놓은 대리석 덩어리의 효과를 자기 것으로

소화하여 발전시켰다.

17세기 바로크의 거장들이 그를 가장 잘 참조한 것으로 보이나, 이는 실물 그대로의 유사성을

배척하기 위해 변형된 방식에서였다.

조각가 베르니니 다음으로 미켈란젤로의 작품들을 가장 잘 활용한 미술가로는 플랑드르의

화가인 루벤스를 손꼽을 수 있다.

잘된 시도 나오고 모자란 시도 나오네

그저 그런 시도 있다네

 

다만 대리석에

고귀하고 천박한 형태가 있다면

그건 순전히 망치를 든 사람 탓일세

 

나의 영혼이 신을 닮았다면

바깥의 아름다움을 탐닉하지 않았을 것을

 

이제 덧없는 가치에는 더 이상 눈돌리지 않으리
