이탈리아의 조각가 · 건축가. 초기작《플루토와 프로세르피나>,
《아폴론과 다프네》은 정교한 대리석 조각으로 유명하다.
교황의 총애로 성당의 조각 제작에 많이 참여하였으며,
산피에트로 대성당 건축도 담당하였다.
조각가인 아버지 피에트로의 지도로 일찍부터 기술을
연마하였으며 아버지와의 합작도 많다.
초기의 대표작은 추기경 보르게세를 위해 만든 4개의 대리석상이며,
그 중에서 《플루토와 프로세르피나》와 특히 《아폴론과 다프네》
(1622 ! 전후)는 유동적인 구성과 특유의 관능미가 놀랍도록
정교한 대리석 조각법으로 표현된다.
1623년부터 우르바누스 8세를 비롯한 역대 교황의 총애를 받아,
조각뿐만 아니라 건축·장식·분수 등 다방면에 걸쳐서 재능을 발휘하였다.
그의 예술은 인노켄티우스 10세 때에 완전히 성숙하였다.
특히 1646∼1652년에 만들어진 산타 마리아 델라 비토리아 성당 안의
성(聖) 테레지아는 완벽한 대리석 조각법이 십분 발휘되어, 산뜻한
구성속에 베르니니 특유의 감미롭고 요염한 관능미가 넘쳐 흐르고 있다.
그의 명성은 나라 밖까지 퍼져, 1665년 프랑스 국왕 루이 14세의
초대로 파리에서 그의 흉상(胸像)을 제작하였다
귀국후 로마의 산 프란체스코 아리파 성당에 (지복자 알베르티나)
(1675)를 만들었는데, 탁월한 기교와 아름다운 관능미의 표현에는
전혀 쇠퇴된 바가 없다.
건축가로서는 산피에트대성당의 건축주임으로서 완성에 힘을
다하였으며, 특히 정면의 주랑( 柱廊)구성은 주목할 만하다.
또 로마시대의 분수 조각에도 뛰어난 작품을 남겼으며,
피아차 나보나의 분수,트리토네의 분수 등이 유명하다.
